Manchester United Retains The Carling Cup

United claimed the first silverware of the new decade thanks to goals in each half from cup final specialist Michael Owen and the super substitute who replaced him – Wayne Rooney.

The latter’s 28th strike of the season edged an entertaining Carling Cup final in favour of the Reds, who therefore retained a cup for the first time in the club’s history. The prospects of this had looked grim after just five minutes when Nemanja Vidic pulled down Gabriel Agbonlahor – but avoided a red card – and James Milner put Aston Villa 1-0 up from the penalty spot.

But Owen’s latest goal in a domestic showpiece – he netted for a certain former club in the 2001 FA Cup and 2003 League Cup finals – ensured there was parity for a large portion of the match until Rooney triumphantly headed home 16 minutes from time.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s surprise omission of Rooney from his starting XI was one of six differences to the side which kicked off against Man City in the scintillating semi win. Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes, the banned Nani and the injured Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs were also out; in came Tomasz Kuszczak, Nemanja Vidic, Antonio Valencia, Ji-sung Park and the front pair of Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen.

One of the mainstays, and United skipper for the day, Patrice Evra had to defend acrobatically inside the first minute to repel a free-kick from Ashley Young on Villa’s left flank. The resulting corner was also dealt with but Martin O’Neill’s men had posted an early warning, one which the Reds failed to heed.

ManU sinks Hull to retain the second position ( ManU 3-1 Hull City)

Manchester United edged an error-strewn encounter with Hull to close to within two points of leaders Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title.

Wayne Rooney drew first blood for United on the stroke of half-time, but later made a calamitous back-pass which paved the way for a Hull penalty.

Craig Fagan levelled from the spot, but Rooney made amends when his low cross led to an Andy Dawson own goal.

Dimitar Berbatov then sealed the win after a pin-point pass from Rooney.

At a stage of the season when champions United traditionally begin to hit their stride, the victory closed the gap on Chelsea after they were held to a goalless draw at Birmingham on Saturday.

But for all Rooney's influence, Sir Alex Ferguson's men - who arrived on Humberside in wounded-animal mode after suffering two defeats in their previous three Premier League outings - were rarely at their best.

In fairness that had much to do with Hull, whose industry and commitment proved formidable obstacles despite some hairy moments for goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, most notably when he miscued a first-half clearance.

Having seen his team charged by the Football Association after last weekend's mass confrontation at Arsenal, Phil Brown had looked to foster a siege mentality among his players in the build-up.

And his players clearly bought into the billing of unfairly-punished underdogs as they absorbed United's strong start and were unlucky to be denied an early penalty.

Fagan found Richard Garcia with a precise through-ball, but as the Australia international raced into the area he was upended by a sliding tackle from Nemanja Vidic that prompted furious protests from Hull.

It was Alan Wiley, the referee whose fitness was questioned by Ferguson after United's 2-2 draw against Sunderland earlier this season, who came to the visitors' rescue.

Wiley saw nothing wrong with the challenge, but no sooner had he waved away the complaints than Hull were at United again, Seyi Olofinjana forcing a fine reflex save from Tomasz Kuszczak.

Another opportunity to open the scoring went begging when Olofinjana put Stephen Hunt through only for the Republic of Ireland midfielder to shoot wide.

As the misses mounted for Hull, the feeling grew that there would be a price to pay against a United side desperate to bounce back following last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Fulham.

The return of a trio of defenders in Rafael da Silva, Vidic and Wes Brown provided a platform for United to go forward with greater confidence, and although their attacking fluency was never at its best, they nonetheless offered plenty of threat.

Giggs twice went close early on, volleying on to the roof of the net before rippling the side-netting with a free-kick, while Rooney and Rafael both forced acrobatic saves from Myhill.

The danger was clear and, sure enough, with the interval beckoning Darren Fletcher swung in a near-post cross from the right flank, Giggs deflected it to Rooney, and the lurking England man prodded home from close-range.

With the hour mark approaching, however, Rooney gifted Hull a reprieve, directing a woeful back-pass to Kuszczak which was intercepted by Fagan.

We're well positioned for title bid - Phelan
Da Silva bundled over Jozy Altidore from the resulting cross, and Fagan shot unerringly past Kuszczak to ensure that there would be no repeat of Geovanni's missed spot kick against Arsenal last week.

Sensing the possibility of a win that would lift them clear of the relegation zone, Hull poured forward in search of a winner, but their enterprise was to prove their undoing.

With 17 minutes remaining, Giggs led a United counter-attack, slotting the ball through for Rooney to direct a low cross towards substitute Ji-Sung Park which the sliding Dawson could only direct into his own net.

And Rooney was once again at the heart of the action as United put the polish on their win with eight minutes remaining, directing a slide-rule pass through the legs of Anthony Gardner that enabled Berbatov to score with a tap-in.

Giggs still hungry for title wins

Manchester United's most decorated player Ryan Giggs believes the Barclays Premier League is tougher than ever - but he is relishing the challenge.

The champions are aiming to bounce back, after losing to Liverpool, when they face Blackburn at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Giggs, who has picked up 11 title winner's medals, is determined to add to his tally.

He said: "You try to concentrate on your own form but you have a little look as to who is round about you.

"There have been some strange results. The top six or eight are separated by only a few points.

"It is going to be closer, because the quality has gone up. Any team can beat anyone, and you have to perform all the way throughout the season.

"It is great for us, the more teams that are competing. We can handle that. For the neutrals, it is brilliant.

"It is why the Premiership is the most exciting league in the world - because of the quality in it and the atmosphere it brings. That has certainly been the way this season."

Giggs is still hurting after the defeat by Liverpool, which left United trailing Chelsea at the top of the table.

But a Carling Cup victory against Barnsley in midweek lifted some of the gloom over Old Trafford.

Giggs said: "We just didn't turn up. That is one game you don't want to lose, against Liverpool at Anfield.

"We could still have won the match, because we had some chances. But whoever scores the first goal, it is very difficult to claw that lead back. It was disappointing we did not perform as well as we can.

"But we had a good win against Barnsley. Now we want to get back on track in the league."

Even though Blackburn were thrashed 5-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Giggs is not expecting an easy ride.

He added: "With Sam Allardyce as manager, you know they are going to be tough and will be organised. You know you have got to perform.

"You look to win all your home games, because you know any away game in the league is difficult. You don't want to be dropping silly points at home."

Hargreaves: Best is yet to come

Owen Hargreaves is impatient to repay the faith of Man United fans and is confident he will return "better than ever".

The 28-year-old England midfielder was told by renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman that his knee problems were among the worst he had seen in his long and distinguished career.

Surgery and 10 months of intensive rehabilitation followed in Colorado, but Hargreaves believes it was essential time well spent - and he is now setting his sights on a long-lived return and a career he hopes can last into his late 30s.

"The best is yet to come, and I just cannot wait to get back out there," he told MUTV.

"I will be trying to improve my game and achieve the great success I think we [United] are destined for."

Hargreaves last played for United against Chelsea 13 months ago and therefore missed out on a championship-winning season.

He is nonetheless hugely heartened by the progress he too has made off the pitch in that time.

"To look back at where I was to where I am now is amazing," he said.

"I just want to be part of it again and have a great season. I cannot wait to pay back some of the faith the fans have shown me."

Owen to return to full training

Manchester United striker Michael Owen is set to return to full training having missed Saturday's match against Sunderland with a groin injury.

Owen came off with the problem during Wednesday's game against Wolfsburg and it was initially feared he would be sidelined for three weeks.

"I'm back in training from Tuesday," the 29-year-old told At The Races.

"A few years ago I would have carried on playing. If I'd continued then I think I'd have pulled my groin."

Meanwhile, the former Liverpool and Newcastle player said he had not given up hope of making Fabio Capello's 23-man England World Cup squad, despite having not featured for the Italian yet."Every aim for an English footballer is to go to the World Cup and get in that squad," said Owen, who has won 89 caps and scored 40 goals for the national team.

"I've got six or seven months to do as well as possible for Manchester United and hopefully Fabio Capello will be watching."

Hargreaves steps up rehab

Owen Hargreaves has taken another positive step is his recovery from a long-standing knee problem by making an appearance at Manchester United's Carrington training ground.

The Red Devils midfielder has been plagued by a tendonitis complaint since his days with German giants Bayern Munich.

It was hoped that he had shaken off the injury when he completed a big-money move to Old Trafford in 2007.

He was able to steer clear of the treatment table during his first season in England, rounding off a memorable campaign by helping United to overcome Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final.

However, the problem resurfaced at the start of last season and it was decided that surgery was the best course of action to take in an effort to rid him of the niggling ailment.
Specialist

Hargreaves travelled to America to see renowned specialist Dr Richard Steadman, who has helped numerous high-profile sports personalities overcome ligament problems in the past.

The England international remained in the States for an extended period of rehabilitation after going under the knife, so his progress could be monitored.

It has now been decided that he is free to return to Manchester, but the physios who have been working with him in America have followed him back across the Atlantic.

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he will not rush Hargreaves back into action, wary of aggravating the injury again.

He has, however, included him in his squad for the Champions League group stage and is optimistic that the 28-year-old could be back to full fitness by the end of November.

Fergie wants Roo in the middle

Wayne Rooney
Sir Alex Ferguson has declared that Wayne Rooney is at his best when play in the centre-forward spot, rather than when he is roaming around.

Rooney has scored four Premier League goals for Manchester United in the current campaign, placing him on par with international team-mate Jermain Defoe. He has scored against Birmingham, Arsenal and had a brace at Wigan.

The Red Devils want Rooney to play a more traditional centre-forward role than in previous years, with Ferguson believing that Rooney will fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo, in terms of scoring at least.

Rooney has welcomed the opportunity, but Ferguson understands the 23-year-old is prone to roaming.

Ferguson told Inside United magazine: "The boy's got a real hunger and drive about him. He has so much energy that sometimes he overdoes it in the sense that he wants to use it all; he'll drop into midfield or he'll go outside left."

"But he's young, and young players tend to sometimes be that way - they want to spend all their energy on the pitch."

"But if he concentrates like he did at Wigan and spends more time in the central areas rather than the wide positions then he will get goals. There's no doubt about that."

Rooney has been a regular scorer since joining United in 2004, however Ferguson suspects Sir Bobby Charlton's club goals record of 249 will be difficult to beat.

"It'll be very tough," Ferguson said. "Sir Bobby's record is 249 goals, so at this stage of Wayne's career I'd say he'll have to do very well to get anywhere near that."

FIFA: No Man United complaint

FIFA say they have received no complaint so far about Manchester United's signing of Paul Pogba last month.

French club Le Havre have said they will ask FIFA to investigate, claiming the teenager had agreed to join them, raising fears United could suffer the same punishment as Chelsea who have been banned from signing any new players until January 2011 for inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract.

Football's world governing body said today they have yet to receive a complaint.

A FIFA spokesman told Press Association Sport: "There has been no receipt of any complaint by Le Havre regarding this player as of today."

United would launch a vigorous defence of their position if the case was referred to FIFA as they insist they have done nothing wrong.

A club spokesman said: "It is complete nonsense. Everything has been done within UEFA guidelines."

However, Le Havre managing director Alain Belsoeur claims to have documentation showing United offered inducements for Pogba to join them and has vowed to include it in submissions to FIFA.

"We are still pursuing our case," said Belsoeur.

"It is a very serious case. We are confident that we'll win because it is in the best interests not just of our club but of sport."

Rooney pledges commitment

Rooney
Manchester United star Wayne Rooney insists he would only ever quit the club if he was no longer wanted at Old Trafford.

The England striker watched as Cristiano Ronaldo walked away from the Premier League champions to move to Real Madrid in a world-record deal this summer.

However, Rooney, who joined United from Everton in 2004, has no intention of following the lead of his former team-mate.

The 23-year-old is adamant he does not see a reason to leave and that he would have to be forced out of the Red Devils by boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rooney said in The Sun: "I've always said I love this club and, as long as I'm wanted here, I'll play here.

"It's as simple as that. I can't see one reason why I should want to move.

"I've everything I want. My family are just 30 minutes away, I'm settled and I honestly can't see me going anywhere else unless I'm told otherwise by the manager."

Ferguson rules out transfers

Sir Alex Ferguson will not go back into the transfer market to solve Manchester United's early season scoring problems.

The United boss surprised many observers this summer when he revealed his intention to use Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck as back-up to experienced trio Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen.

A return of just one goal in the champions' first two fixtures, including Wednesday's shock defeat at Burnley, has led to suggestions that Ferguson could scrap his initial plan and make a move for one of Valencia's outstanding pair, David Villa and David Silva.

However, Ferguson has insisted that will not happen.

"Did I say we wouldn't make any more signings?" he responded when quizzed on the subject this morning.

"That is it. I have already made the point - and I am sure of it. This is a great group of players."

The news might come as a disappointment to United fans, who are still struggling to adapt to life without Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yet Ferguson's faith in his current crop of players is undimmed, even if he does have a problem in central defence where Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out for three to four weeks with a thigh injury.

Ferdinand suffered a slight tear during training last week ahead of the Premier League opener against Birmingham.

Initially Ferguson felt that Ferdinand would only be sidelined for a couple of weeks. However, that estimate has now been revised.

"Rio is going to be out for three to four weeks," said Ferguson.

It means Ferdinand will miss Saturday's trip to Wigan, plus next weekend's eagerly anticipated encounter with Arsenal.

In addition, Ferdinand now seems certain to miss the next two England games, starting with a friendly against Slovenia on September 5, then a World Cup qualifier against Croatia four days later, when victory would book the Three Lions' place in South Africa next summer.

It also raises concerns over Ferdinand's general fitness given the £29.1million defender suffered a back injury and a calf problem last season that kept him sidelined for extended periods.

There is some good news on the injury front for United though as Ferdinand's central defensive partner Nemanja Vidic is set to make his first start of the season at the DW stadium on Saturday as United look to bounce back from Wednesday's shock defeat at Burnley.

"Nemanja has trained with us for 10 days and he is ready for the game," said Ferguson.

"Hopefully he will be okay by tomorrow."

Defensive headache for Fergie

Sir Alex Ferguson's defensive problems refuse to go away, with Manchester United down to the bare bones in that department.

Just one game into the 2009/10 campaign and the reigning Premier League champions have already seen their resources stretched to breaking point.

The Red Devils have endured countless injuries to key members of their back four in recent times, and this season is proving to be no different.

Rio Ferdinand is the biggest miss for United at present, with the England international set to undergo a scan in order to determine the full extent of a his thigh strain.

He is by no means the only one carrying a slight knock at present, though, and Ferguson will be forced to shuffle his pack once again when United go to Burnley on Wednesday.

"Ferdinand will be out for two weeks - the next two or three games I would think," the Scot said following the Red Devils' 1-0 victory over Birmingham on Sunday.

"(Nemanja) Vidic is training so, hopefully, we'll have him back for next Saturday at Wigan.

"Jonny Evans is injured again, Gary Neville has just resumed training and Rafa da Silva is still out with a dislocated shoulder.

"We've had a hard time with defensive injuries over the last two years but have good replacements who have experience."

Fergie: United will find new stars

Sir Alex
Sir Alex Ferguson insists new heroes will emerge at Manchester United following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

United begin life in the Barclays Premier League without the FIFA world player of the year when they face Birmingham.

There is bound to be some trepidation among supporters as they head into the unknown, if only because it is difficult to see how United will make up for Ronaldo's incredible goals output.

But Ferguson has attempted to calm the anxiety by pointing out a number of occasions when events did not quite turn out the way fans wanted, only for their team to profit as a result.

"The important thing is not to get too upset when a player leaves you," he said.

"This club can produce players all the time and we will go on.

"We almost had Ronaldinho signed in 2003 and two months later we have bought Ronaldo.

"Before that we thought we had Paul Gascoigne but didn't get him and we got Paul Ince and Roy Keane.

"We had a chance to get David Hirst and then Alan Shearer. Instead we got Eric Cantona. It happens that way."

The difference this time is more like 1995 when Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis and Mark Hughes were allowed to leave during a single summer.

Ferguson's entire tenure was questioned in some quarters, only for the famed 'Class of 92' to emerge and carry the Old Trafford outfit to even greater glory.

And once again, the United boss is looking to players within his own ranks to emerge.

"We are searching to improve ourselves but this time the improvement will come from within," he said.

"We will miss Ronaldo. He was always a threat and his stats were fantastic, he is the best player in the world.

"But he was part of a good team. Everything you set out to do is about the team.

"We won't forget what he did for us but we have players who can make the same impact."

The most obvious examples are £17million new-boy Antonio Valencia and Ronaldo's fellow Portugal international Nani.

Also signed from Sporting Lisbon, Nani enjoyed a decent debut campaign but was poor last term, to the extent that many felt Ronaldo would have company on his way out of Old Trafford.

Ferguson thought otherwise and was vindicated with a performance he felt merited the man-of-the-match award during Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Chelsea.

"Nani seems far more settled," Ferguson said.

"I was surprised when they gave the man of the match to Ricardo Carvalho last Sunday. They obviously weren't watching the game.

"Nani had a terrific game.

"I don't think he was overshadowed by Cristiano. He was very friendly with him and he looked up to him.

"But maybe he sees this as his big opportunity."

To Ferguson's surprise, Nani was able to shrug off the effects of a dislocated shoulder and make a 17-minute appearance for his country against Liechtenstein on Wednesday.

That could be enough to get him into a United side that includes Wes Brown when the Red Devils open their title defence at Old Trafford.

Brown has trained all week after a recent thigh problem so, with Jonny Evans unlikely to play as he nurses an ankle injury aggravated on international duty with Northern Ireland, the England star may line up alongside Rio Ferdinand.

United have opened the last two domestic campaigns with goalless draws against two sides - Reading and Newcastle - who went on to get relegated.

Ferguson would be unhappy if his team suffer a third successive opening-day setback as they chase a fourth successive championship, if only because he expects the title to be a tightly-fought affair.

"You could put a blanket over ourselves, Chelsea and Liverpool," he said.

"What may decide it is if one club gets a run of injuries, or a lot of them at one time.

"We have more experience because of winning the titles but it doesn't make that much difference in terms of the competition we are going to get into.

"To win four in a row would be fantastic. But this is a difficult league to win and rather than look to May I am looking at Sunday."

Fergie backing Roo to progress

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United will be seeing the best of Wayne Rooney in two years' time.

Rooney is currently entering his sixth season with the Red Devils after joining from Everton for £25.6million in 2004.

Although the striker has enjoyed great success at Old Trafford he is yet to establish himself as Sir Alex Ferguson's premier striker.

Ferguson believes there will be greater expectation on Rooney's shoulder this season, not only due to Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo's departures, but because it is a World Cup year.

Rooney is a certainty for Fabio Capello's England squad for next summer's finals if the Three Lions qualify and Ferguson believes there is more improvement to come from the 23-year-old.
Expectation

"There will be an expectation about Wayne Rooney this season purely because he is English," Ferguson said.

"Without question he is the main striker that England's hopes will be pinned on at the World Cup, so that is where the expectation is all coming from.

"But I would like to see the boy develop his game in a lot of departments.

"He is 23 now. You will get the maturity when he gets to 25. Then there will be a more consistent nature to his game."

Maturity

Ferguson has acknowledged Rooney needs to add consistency to his scoring, although he believes with maturity he will deliver with more regularity.

"A lot of players go on little runs of scoring three or four in a row, then they have a couple of weeks off, come back and score five in a row," he continued.

"Wayne has periods like that. He has a little bit to do to get rid of it. That is where the maturity side has to come into it.

"He has the hunger and the natural ability to do a lot of these things. All he has to do is show the maturity to get there."

Owen on song for United

Manchester United yesterday won their second match of their pre-season tour of the Far East, and new signing Michael Owen was again on the scoresheet as a Malaysian XI were dispatched 2-0 at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpar this afternoon.

United boss Alex Ferguson fielded an entirely revamped side for the club's second game against a Malaysian XI inside three days, with Owen named in the starting line-up for the first time in his Old Trafford career.

Ferguson's men wasted little time before going into the lead, with a cross form the left deflected by young Italian striker Federico Macheda into the path of Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher, who could have shot himself, but instead pulled the ball back for Macheda to finish with confidence from just inside the six-yard box.

That was in the eleventh minute, and two minutes later they doubled their advantage. Serbian starlet Zoran Tosic found himself in acres of space on the left and picked out a carefully placed cross to Macheda in the box.

The Italian missed the ball at the near post, but the Malaysian defence panicked, and Owen, showing the predator's instinct for which he is renowned, pounced to slot in from close range.

That was the striker's second of the tour, and it looked as though he would get even more after hitting the post from another Tosic centre in the 33rd minute.

However, the Mancunians' momentum flattened out somewhat as the game moved on, with the biggest cheer of the second half being reserved for the appearance of Wayne Rooney. The Liverpudlian almost scored within two minutes of his 64th minute entrance, fastening onto a long-ball from the back, before putting a low effort past the keeper's left-hand post.

Overall it was a workmanlike performance from Ferguson's men, who resisted a late flurry of pressure from the hosts, but the victory will ease any lingering anxiety caused by the weekend's somewhat lacklustre display against the same opposition.

Jakarta Bombs: United cancel trip

Manchester United have cancelled Saturday's match against an Indonesia Super League XI in Jakarta following today's bomb attacks.

The blasts affected two hotels, one of which, the Ritz-Carlton, was the hotel United were supposed to be staying in tomorrow night after leaving the first game of their four-match tour in Kuala Lumpur.United now have the option to remain in Malaysia for a few extra days or travel up to Seoul for what should have been the third leg of their trip next Friday.

However, there might also be reservations among the players - many of whom have young families - about being so far away from home and pressure might be applied to go straight back to the UK.

United chief executive David Gill is on the tour and he will no doubt be left to make the final decision, whatever that may be.

Details of the attacks, which were carried out at the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton, were still sketchy this morning.

United swoop for striker

Manchester United have confirmed that they have completed the signing of striker Mame Biram Diouf from Norwegian club Molde FK.

The 21-year-old has been immediately loaned back to Molde where he will remain until January.

The transfer may surprise some after manager Sir Alex Ferguson stressed just last week that he would not be making any more signings this summer following the arrivals of Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan.

However, the Red Devils boss admitted that after other clubs lodged bids for the Senegalese youngster the Premier League champions had to act fast.

"We signed a young player yesterday from Norway who we've been looking at for two years," he told the club's official website.
Final summer signing

"We weren't intending on signing anyone else after last week - we feel we have a full squad - but the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids.

"So we had to decide whether we acted or didn't. We decided to act and he'll be the last person we sign."

Diouf has reportedly interested the likes of Arsenal, Ajax and PSV in the past while Tottenham are thought to be one of the clubs who tabled a bid for the frontman.

Attention in the youngster developed last weekend when Diouf netted a hat-trick in the first nine minutes of a Norwegian league clash against Brann before he added another in a 5-2 win.

The new United arrival has scored 30 league goals from 62 games since signing for Molde, the same club United signed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from, in 2007.

Potential

Molde manager Kjell Jonevret is confident Diouf has the potential to succeed at Old Trafford and was delighted that the player would remain for the remainder of the Norwegian season.

"This is fun for all of us in Molde, fun for Mame and not least for his family in Senegal," he told VG Nett.

"That he will stay with us for the rest of the season is really important to us.

"Mame is an interesting player that I have worked with for two years. I don't know what plans United have for him, but he has a great potential.

"Mame is good now, but he can be even better."

Hargreaves eyes Sept return

Owen Hargreaves is aiming to hand Manchester United a boost in January as he steps up his rehabilitation from double knee surgery.

The England international has endured a miserable past 12 months after undergoing two operations to cure a tendinitis problem that has plagued him since his Bayern Munich days.

Although Hargreaves is to play no part in United's pre-season tour of the Far East he is expected to join up with his team-mates in Munich for the Audi Cup at the end of July.

Sir Alex Ferguson is happy with how Hargreaves' rehabilitation has gone to date and is quietly confident his injury nightmare could soon be behind him.

"I think we are looking at the end of September depending on how he reacts," said Ferguson.

"We are happy with his rehabilitation so far and while he won't be ready to play in Munich, he will be able to train."

Owen - Utd to reignite career

Owen now a red devil
Michael Owen is eager to put his 'poor spell' at Newcastle United behind him by scoring goals and lifting silverware at his new club Manchester United.

The England international sealed his shock free transfer to the Red Devils on Friday after passing a medical and then signing a two-year contract.

Owen endured a difficult time at St James' Park, where he signed from Real Madrid in 2005, netting just 26 Premier League goals in four years.

The 29-year-old is excited about the next chapter in his career as he looks to recapture his best form and help United continue their winning ways.

He told MUTV: "It feels great. I never even had it in my wildest dreams really but then I got the call from the manager to come and meet him.
Shock

"It was a shock but I'm obviously really happy and things have moved quickly since then.

"I probably had a poor spell up at Newcastle but prior to that, my career was very good and I'm sure a top club like this can reignite my career. Hopefully I can score a few goals and help the team to more success.

"It's early days but when you think about United, you automatically think about winning trophies, the stadium, the massive fanbase."

Fitness

Owen also rejected suggestions that he is injury prone, stressing that he passed his United medical without any complications.

He added: "A lot is made of it and probably a lot will come out in the coming months and years but I certainly don't feel like I'm injury prone.

"I'd like to think that everyone was quite surprised at how my medical was. I knew I would pass my medical, I've obviously passed them before. My fitness is fine."

Tevez rules out Reds move

Carlos Tevez has ruled out a summer move to Liverpool, Sky Sports News sources have learned.

The Argentina international, who has spent the last two seasons on loan with Manchester United, has emerged as a transfer target for a quartet of Premier League clubs.

United have first option to sign the striker, whose registration is owned by a company rather than another club, but Tevez has indicated he is not happy at Old Trafford after seeing his starting options restricted this season.

That has caused a scramble for his services with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all credited with an interest in the former West Ham favourite.

However, Sky Sports News sources have been informed that a move to Anfield is not an option for Tevez.

That leaves the Red Devils, their local rivals City and London outfit Chelsea battling it out to secure the energetic forward's signature for next season.

Christiano Ronaldo - Is he going to be a success at Real Madrid

Christiano Ronaldo
Finally the time has come for the magician from Portugal to leave England and find his place among the Catalans. But is he going to be a success at Madrid ????

Before 3 years Ronaldo was considered only a showoff with few numbers under his sleeves . He was a big game flop and fell down too easily (which still goes on ). Wayne Rooney was considered the better of the two. But after the departure of van Nistelrooy again to Madrid Ronaldo claimed the center stage . It was born out of necessity as Sir Alex gave him the license to roam . With his speed , dribbling and eye for goals he stole the headlines but the actual work was done buy Rooney , Giggs ,Carrick .......

Ronaldo claimed every soft goals ,penalties and free kicks .Most of the time Rooney has to sacrifice his favoured position just behind a main striker due to Ronaldo's ineffective defending meant Ferguson was forced to utilise him playing out wide. It should be seen how Roanaldo adapts to the Madrid set up .With Raul , Kaka and other super stars .United was best suited for him

There were plenty of signs last season - quite apart from his disgraceful reaction to being substituted against Manchester City - that Ronaldo was more interested in himself than his club, posturing that will not be missed. Giving posession cheaply and not even trying to get it back . Trying to make referees take decisions in his favour . Even trying to referee a game.

But the English game is going to miss one of its most famous talents . There will no longer be those trade mark free kicks , step overs ....

United have lost their top players before and Sir Alex knows what is best for the club . It is time for Wayne Rooney to claim the head lines as now doing for his national side
